Diversifying farms and restoring wildlife habitat in Iowa
In Iowa, the western prairie landscape meets the wooded bluffs of the Mississippi River and its tributaries. Farmers have plowed much of the prairie to grow corn and soybeans, and Savanna Institute’s technical service provider in Iowa helps farmers add trees as windbreaks and along stream edges to diversify the landscape. For beginning farmers, Iowa is a hub for apprenticeship opportunities to learn on-farm agroforestry skills with mentors.
